DIY Comfort: Make Your Own Envelope Pillow Cover in 5 Simple Steps

There’s something deeply satisfying about customizing your own space. At Cineku, we believe your comfort should be a personal expression. While our pillows provide the perfect foundation for rest, the pillowcase is the canvas for your style.
This simple DIY project allows you to create a professional-looking envelope pillow cover—no zippers or buttonholes required! It’s a quick and rewarding way to refresh your bedroom or living room decor. Let’s get started.
Why an Envelope Closure?
The envelope closure is a genius design. It uses a simple overlapping back flap to keep your pillow securely tucked in, yet allows for easy removal for washing. It’s sleek, functional, and perfect for beginners.
What You’ll Need:
- Fabric of your choice (Linen, cotton, or a soft blend work wonderfully)
- A pillow insert (We recommend using a Cineku pillow for the ultimate comfort!)
- Fabric scissors or a rotary cutter
- Sewing machine (or a needle and thread for hand-sewing)
- Pins or fabric clips
- Iron and ironing board
- Tape measure and ruler
Step 1: Calculate and Cut Your Fabric
First, you need to determine the size of your fabric panels. Here is the formula:
- Front Panel: Measure the width and height of your pillow insert, then add 1 inch (2.5 cm) to each dimension for the seam allowance.
- Example for an 18″x18″ pillow: Cut one front panel 19″x19″.
- Back Panels (Two): For the width, use the same measurement as your front panel. For the height, take the front panel’s height, divide it by 2, and then add 3-4 inches (7.5-10 cm). This creates the necessary overlap.
- *Example for an 18″x18″ pillow: 19″ (height) / 2 = 9.5″. Then 9.5″ + 4″ = 13.5″. So, cut two back panels measuring 19″ wide x 13.5″ high.*
Step 2: Prepare the Envelope Flaps
Take your two back panels. On one of the 19-inch sides (the width) of each panel, you will create a clean, finished hem.
- Fold the edge over by 1/2 inch (1.25 cm) to the wrong side of the fabric and press with an iron.
- Fold it over again by another 1/2 inch (1.25 cm) and press once more. This encloses the raw edge.
- Stitch this hem down in a straight line. Repeat for the second back panel.
Step 3: Layer and Pin the Pieces
- Lay your front panel right-side-up on your workspace.
- Place the two back panels on top of the front panel, right-side-down.
- Position them so their hemmed edges face toward the center and they overlap each other. The top back panel should cover the top half of the front, and the bottom back panel should cover the bottom half, with their hemmed edges overlapping in the middle. All outer raw edges should be aligned.
- Use pins or fabric clips to secure all three layers of fabric together around all four edges.
Step 4: Sew It All Together
- Using your sewing machine, stitch around the entire perimeter of the square with a 1/2 inch (1.25 cm) seam allowance.
- For extra durability, backstitch at the beginning and end of your seam. You can also zig-zag stitch or use a serger on the raw edges to prevent fraying.
Step 5: Clip, Turn, and Press!
- Carefully clip the corners diagonally (being careful not to cut the stitching). This reduces bulk and gives you sharper corners when you turn it right-side-out.
- Turn the entire pillow cover right-side-out through the envelope opening in the back.
- Use a chopstick or a blunt pencil to gently push out the corners to a perfect point.
- Give the cover a final press with your iron for a crisp, professional finish.
You Did It!
Now, simply insert your pillow, fluff, and admire your handiwork. You’ve just created a custom, washable cover that reflects your personal style.
